OUR OUTCOMES

Changing the Lives of Children Labeled with Learning Disabilities (LD) and Attention Deficit Disorder (ADHD)

Research on risk and resilience strongly suggests that the most important factors in the life successes of adults labeled with learning disabilities or attention deficit disorder is not IQ or academic success, but self-esteem, self-awareness (metacognition), and self-determination (e.g.; Paul J. Gerber et al.,1992; M.H. Raskind et al, 1997; E.E. Werner, 1993). Building self-esteem through mentorship is essential in supporting LD/ADHD youth. Mentoring requires a partnership, forged on trust and understanding, between the student and mentor. The initial partnership builds on dedication, patience and cooperation. Our mentors are uniquely qualified to help guide and support children with LD/ADHD as their personal experiences as an individual with a learning difference mirrors that of their student. This is an important journey during which Project Eye-To-Eye mentors help students to learn about themselves and thereby develop their own metacognitive skills, skills of self-empowerment, and the skills of self-advocacy so they can be successful in life.

Project Eye-To-Eye is the only nationally based mentoring program that works directly with LD/ADHD youth to build self-esteem, develop self-awareness, and implement academic accommodations. Project Eye-To-Eye's mentoring model is designed to achieve three tangible and measurable objectives in our target population of students with learning disabilities:

BUILD SELF-ESTEEM
IMPROVE SELF-ADVOCACY BEHAVIORS
DEVELOP META-COGNITIVE SKILLS
